Palliative Care Queensland (PCQ) welcomes the Labor Party’s commitment to funding dementia respite services.
PCQ’s Dr Will Syrmis said the announcement by Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk recognised the need to act in the interests of Queensland’s ageing population.
“The campaign promise that a future Labor Government would make $20 million available over four years for grants to respite services acknowledges the need for better support of families caring for older relatives with dementia,” Dr Syrmis said.
“Labor’s intention to install a Minister with responsibility for broader seniors’ issues – and the establishment of an information resource to meet the needs of older Queenslanders – should be only the first step in a long-term commitment to their care.”
Dr Syrmis said PCQ joined other public health organisations in urging a Labor government to listen to those working in the sector when developing policies and programs that affect seniors.
“Palliative Care Queensland looks forward to hearing from all parties contesting the election how they propose to better meet the needs of older people throughout the state.” He said.
