PCQ Media Release: Any inquiry about End-Of-Life laws must include palliative care

Media Release: 24 January 2018 – Any inquiry about end-of-life laws must include palliative care

Palliative Care Queensland (PCQ) Executive Officer Shyla Mills says palliative care must be included in any Parliamentary Inquiry into end-of-life care and laws.

“PCQ supports the proposal of a Queensland Parliamentary Inquiry into the quality of dying, death and bereavement in the state, including examining end-of-life laws. However, any Inquiry must explore the availability of palliative care and other supports to ensure all Queenslanders are able die with dignity through the symptom management and psychological support palliative care provides.
“Dying is a part of life, it happens to us all. We know that well-resourced palliative care can improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

“To improve the quality of dying we need more community conversations, education of health professionals and a supported workforce dedicated to palliative care. The availability of excellent palliative care must be central to any conversation in the community or Parliament about end-of-life laws,” said Ms Mills.
