Palliative Care Queensland

Dying, death and grief are a part of life

That’s why we believe that Last Aiders are crucial to our communities. That’s why we offer the Last Aid course, so you can learn the skills to guide yourself and others during this final chapter.

This international standardised introductory-level education program is for those who want to improve their confidence and skills in supporting carers, family members, colleagues or people experiencing a life limiting diagnosis, dying, death or grief.

You provide the venue (including AV), catering (including welcome tea/coffee + 30 mins break time catering), handouts to localise the participant resource kit and promotion of training through their networks.

Potential additional costs: If located more than 10km from CBD, travel costs from PCQ office in BNE CBD (including staff time + km reimbursement) and parking if required.

Participant numbers: 6 participants minimum, 18 participants maximum.

Learning Outcome

You’ll cover four modules; dying as a normal part of life, planning ahead, relieving suffering and final goodbyes.

All so you can:

  • Learn what palliative care, advance care planning and compassionate communities are.
  • Understand what carers or family members of people with a life limiting illness may be experiencing.
  • Initiate community-level supportive conversations with carers or people who know someone living with a life limiting illness.
  • Know the basic skills to accessing quality local information, services and support.

“Really good training. There was a good balance of information giving, activities and handouts.” – Course participant

“I will use what I learnt today with my own family and friends – having these brave conversations to better understand their wants and wishes.” – Course participant

“The key take home message for me was that discussions about death should not be put in the background. Death is normal – and we need to talk more openly about it – all facets.” – Course participant
