Palliative Care Queensland

National Close the Gap Day 2022

Today is national Close The Gap Day, which encourages us all to pledge support towards achieving Indigenous health equality by 2030.

It first began in 2006, when the Justice Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander’s revealed a report detailing the vast gap in life expectancy and health standards for our First Nations People. It has now been over 10 years, when the initial Close the Gap Statement of Intent was signed by then Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, and the latest reports sadly reveal that the gap in life expectancy for First Nations People is widening. So, it is more than critical that our communities come together today, participate in meaningful actions and to share the message that Australians value health equality as a fundamental right for all.

Palliative Care Queensland’s meaningful actions include:

  • Today our CEO is attending a Queensland Health First Nations community-based palliative care day-long workshop; and
  • Developing a reconciliation plan, which has an active working group of collaborative people, who have been volunteering their time for the past 18 months working on this plan.
